Jackson Pollock (1912-1956) is the most famous exponent of the so-called New York School, of Abstract Expressionism (→ Abstract Expressionism | Informel). His Drip Paintings are among the most important and famous creations of the 1940s. Even during his lifetime, the US painter was stylised as an icon of American abstract painting and a "weapon against socialist realism". He was considered ingenious, rebellious, but also tormented by self-doubt.
