What is it about:
Art action in the 6th district
8 November 1938 marked the beginning of the November protgroms, which reached their terrible climax on the night of 9-10 November with countless deaths, destruction and expulsions. Especially
in Vienna, cruel action was taken against the Jewish population and many synagogues, shops and schools were destroyed.
The two organisers Adisa Czeczelich and Stefan Alexander Kamp call for participation in the public performance, in order to meet each other in painting and to remember together, 10 canvases will be painted together in silence at the intersection of Stum pergasse / Mittelgasse / Schmalzhofgasse.
The encounter through art is supported by the artists present, who help the participants with the handling of prepared paint containers and brushes.
The chosen location of the action Stumpergasse / Schmalzhofgasse is predestined for an encounter for two reasons: Adolf Hitler lived in Stumpergasse in 1907 and again in 1908. His failed desire to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and his unsuccessful career as a painter presumably had an impact on his later political machinations. The project "Meeting in silence in art and through art" is thus given an additional component: In the present, art is used to sensitively come to terms with history in order to put a stop to forgetting and suppression and to serve as a reminder for the future.
The light stele created by Lukas Maria Kaufmann at Stumpergasse 42 marks the location of the Stumperschule, which was destroyed in the November progroms, and forms the motif accompanying the action and the speeches.
