Kurt Toifl

In the 1960s, under the artistic guidance of the renowned university professor Gerda Matejka-Felden, I received the decisive impetus to engage more intensively with the visual arts from then on. Through a consistently self-taught process, I developed my artistic vocabulary, initially focusing on small-scale, naturalistic works, preferably in ink and pen. Over time, I came to feel that this formal constraint left too little room for spontaneity and emotional immediacy. Gradually, therefore, I turned towards large-scale, abstract painting in acrylic, which opened up a freer, gestural visual language for me. From this process, my central artistic credo emerged: „Shaping space through the dynamics of colour and form.“ For me, these two have ever since been forces that give movement to space.

In my paintings, I allow these energies to unfold until they offer the viewer a space of visual resonance. My painting is an invitation to experience colour and form as living impulses. I follow my intuition and create works that set space and perception in motion.
