Veronika Koppel was born in Vienna in 1962 and also lives here. She discovered her love of painting as a child and attended various courses at art schools in Vienna from 1969 to 1980. From 1981 to 1987, the artist decided to study marine ethology at the University of Vienna. As part of her studies, she received artistic training in the graphics department of the Zoological Institute under Prof. Maria Mizzaro-Wimmer. During this time, she created various illustrations for publications. Since 2020, she has been working more intensively with painting again. Nature serves as a model for her paintings. Marine animals, which she has encountered on over 1000 dives, serve as subjects. Her particular passion is acrylic painting on canvas. The artist has developed her own style of painting, which she calls KOVE style. She combines different painting techniques. She chooses various acrylic pouring techniques as a background to depict the colours of the sea. She uses textured paste to create the technique of textured wall art, conveying a sense of depth, contrast and three-dimensionality. The artist uses various types of acrylic paint, achieving glossy effects with metallic colours. Some pictures are painted with fluorescent colours and these have special effects when illuminated with black light. Veronika Koppel draws her inspiration from her dives and also captures this in the titles of her paintings. The first part of the title is the name of a dive site where the animal can be found. These are usually dive sites in the Mediterranean, the Red Sea, the Caribbean and the Maldives. The second part of the title is the scientific name of the animal. The artist aims to combine nature and art in all her pictures.
